Optimist and RS Tera Red Ribbon Training 2022

This four-day course is organised under the supervision of Melvyn Cooper Sailing and has been developed to build children's confidence to go racing. Red Ribbon Training is a sailing course which has been designed for sailors to follow the year after they have completed their RYA stage 1 & 2 and spent time on the water practicing these foundation skills.

Red Ribbon Training is hugely successful and has been a popular part of the HISC Youth Pathway since 2017. The programme is staged in late Spring with the aim of enhancing children’s boat handing skills and start their journey of racing with friends at HISC.

Children gain confidence, form friendships, and learn fundamental racing skills that help them progress to the next stage of their sailing career. It is available to Optimist sailors with their own boat only and RS Tera sailors hiring a HISC boat or owning their own boat.

Red Ribbon is open to children if:

• they have gained RYA Stage 1 & 2 and practiced these foundation skills the previous year;
• they can tack and gybe happily when sailing in the lagoon;
• they would like to be able to sail independently around West Mud;
• they would like to learn how to sail around a triangle course;
• they would like to learn how to start and finish a short race;
• they can commit to four training days that lead to the Red Ribbon Regatta on 18th June;
• they would like to take part in the Regatta Fleet in Youth Race Week.

Red Ribbon is not for your child if:

• they are a beginner, learning the foundation skills of steering accurately, tacking and gybing;
• they have not completed RYA Stage 1 & 2 the previous year;
• they are looking for improver race training. Red Ribbon is a pre-curser to this, providing children with the opportunity to try racing at the end of the course;
• they have already started racing in the Regatta fleet and need a refresher.

Red Ribbon Regatta - Saturday 18th June 2022

Course Cost

As a guide we expect the cost for the four day course to be approximately £140 (£35 per training day) but costs will be finalised once we have confirmed numbers of participants. The group will be kept small, no more than 24 children divided into 4 groups of 6.

The Red Ribbon Regatta is separate to the training course. It is fun racing day, with coaches on the water and lots of prizes! This is expected to have a £10/20 entry fee. This is a fantastic end to the training course and leaves children confident to take part in other youth racing events.

Parental Participation

Parental participation is vital, to aid the children’s confidence and to help on the water and shore. We will have use of club rescue boats as part of the course; however, parents are required to help with launch and recovery, and assist the coaches whilst afloat.

This is NOT a DROP and GO, be prepared to learn as much as your child!

Signing up for Red Ribbon 2022

To sign your child up for Red Ribbon 2022 you must complete the booking form found here: https://forms.gle/5gGzraK7d85wQZec8

This includes questions that the coaches will use to organise the children into groups and understand how to help the children move forward with their sailing goals.

The booking form will be open until the 10th January 2022 at which point the coaches will allocate sailors into groups depending on their experience, goals and boat type. We will do our best to accommodate all requests for a place, but we are limited to 24 sailors as this is the maximum resources available for safety, so please note filling in the form does not guarantee a space on the course.

Once offered a space you will have to pay in full for all four days to secure a place. Information on how to pay will be shared once the places are confirmed. We will confirm places and costs by email in February 2022.

Covid

All involved in the organisation of these activities are working hard to ensure compliance with Government, RYA and HISC Club COVID guidelines. Information regarding how HISC members will be able to stay Covid safe and compliant at the time will be shared via the usual channels. The organisers will do all they can to ensure that the course goes ahead whilst adhering to the rules surrounding organised sport, use of changing facilities and social gatherings.
