Course Overview
The pre-entry is an essential prerequisite to the RYA dinghy instructor course, it is a practical test determining whether a candidate has the required sailing ability and seamanship to become an instructor.
The assessment is conducted by an RYA trainer and only valid for one year. During assessment candidates are judged on the preparation and execution of each task including, awareness of others, Showing confident sailing at all times, awareness of the five essentials.
During the assessment, the trainer will seek to confirm the candidate can sail in a controlled and competent manner, considering preparation, communication, approach and execution of each exercise.
These may include: Sailing around a triangular course; to sail in a tight circle, sailing a follow the leader course, man overboard, and other sailing based skills including; rudderless, Lee Shore landings and departure, pick up of a mooring anchor, come alongside a motorboat, and recovering a capsized dinghy and sailing away.
This provides an overall impression of the sailing ability and whether it is of the standard to attend instructor course.
